From linocut to carving in lacquer
Inspired by the printing plates of linocut, I developed a technique that achieves a relief-like appearance through the play of light and shadow created by the individual cuts. The reflections that arise from light falling on the slanted cut edges make the lines glow or almost disappear depending on the viewing angle. This creates an interplay of light and dark that changes with the viewer's position – the work becomes visually active, almost alive. The topographical map is stripped of its original function through artistic alienation. Instead, it now offers the opportunity to lose oneself in the newly created landscape, to reorient oneself, and to change one's perspective on the surroundings.
